European Championship: Spaniards take gold, Poles come in 10th
On Sunday, the European Team Championship came to an end at Gleneagles golf course. It was dominated by the Spanish team, which beat the Icelanders in the final. Bronze medals were grabbed by Italians. The Polish team came in 10th.
The competition opened with group matches. Adrian Meronk and Mateusz Gradecki awaited rivals from Denmark, Spain, and Portugal in pool C. The first duel was with the Danes and was won by the Polish double 1up.
Later on, the Poles failed to win against the Spanish (2&1) as well the Portuguese (5&3), and, having scored two points, they took the 3rd place in the group. In the final ranks, the white and red came in 10th.
Composed of Pedro Oriol and Scott Fernandez (360. and 483. OWGR, European Tour golfers), the Spanish team advanced to semi-finals from group C and, eventually won the tournament.
The silver went to Birgir Hafthorsson – Axel Boasson from Iceland (601. and 666. OWGR, Challenge Tour golfers), while the Italians – Francesco Laporta and Alessandro Tadini (577. and 862. OWGR. Challenge Tour golfers) – took the third step of the podium.
Among the ladies, the best were the Swedish, second the French, and third the representatives from Great Britain. In the mixed rankings, gold was awarded to the Icelanders, silver to the Brits, and the bronze medal went to the Swedish male and female golfers.
